a welcome chance

On Saturday, May 22, 2010—two months before my 40th birthday—I finally set foot in the DC Animal Shelter to adopt another cat.

From My Cats, Chance

Since Blu passed in January, I keenly was aware of the importance of the need to have two cats for several reasons. For one my feet and ankles had become the object of feline claw torture each movement to and from the bed. Then there was Reneseme’s nagging need to always be around me when I was home and to add to that not sleeping at night. Not that I am complaining, this time I had with Reneseme brought our bond quite close.  After five months of this and several searing stings in the shower every morning, I knew I had to have another cat.

Since Timmy was a shelter foster care cat, I was quite adamant on getting a foster care cat. I found quite a few good possibilities; however, each wound up not working out because either they had found the cat door and had become indoor/outdoor or there was a health issue.  I meticulously sought out descriptions that would make a good match in my home for both Reneseme and I. In addition, the cat had to be male. Why? Just cuz! Read moreRead more

Reneseme at 1 year old

Um, so not much chatter to post, just some milestones, and loves…

Reneseme is 1 year old now. I still need to finish the Raising Reneseme series. It is gonna be a difficult journey to write about since I lost both Blu and Timmy; however, Reneseme is quintessentially my exact copy in personality.

Check out the new pics and videos of Reneseme from 1 week old to 1 year old. Read moreRead more

Raising Reneseme, part 2: remembering Morris

When we last encountered our story, all was lost. The villainous fox’s apparent destruction of this newborn happy family was a sure bet. But nature in an extraordinary day later, beat the odds.

Seems the other young female, sister to the young mother, instinctively gathered the kittens and carefully placed them under the porch. She of course did not know how to be a mother or could she nurse. After a while my co-worker caught a sound pitched squeals. Seeking this noise she found, sadly, two and a half 2 week old kittens. Morbidly, the other female even recovered the remains of one kitten bitten in half. The other two, one the runt of the litter was wounded, and the other seemed healthy, and unscathed. Raising Reneseme, part 1: what in the world was i thinking…

On Friday, April 18, 2009 I made a decision… A decision where after a month of scratches, amazing observations, and some enjoyably frustrating incidents, I finally discover after almost forty years, I am much that same young child who daydreamed he’d some day tame lions and tigers.

Raising a three week old newborn grounds you and your life; doing so is an around the clock responsibility, always second thinking of yourself. In the first five weeks after birthing, a mother cat rarely leaves her litter for ever long. Since adopting Reneseme, my own life has kind of been as such. And for myself I find grace living in this duty daily; I am reawakened back into a world I apparently slumbered along, exhausted.

Each day this young kittens instincts befuddles me. As if from high above, I revel toward the instincts wired soundly into every tree, flower, human, and kitten. Even though I already am quite owned by two cats (Blu and Timmy) and am fully aware of the nature of cats, this relationship seems more intimate and crucial. Not only for the kitten, but for myself as well. Read moreRead more
